The most important step in creating a popular podcast / video web series

Everybody’s talking about how to create great content and of-course how to do insanely great content marketing?

Almost everybody is also talking about videos and podcasts being the next great content tools/ formats/ ideas that are more meaningful and lead to higher engagement.

So what is the most important step in creating a popular podcast / video web series that gets serious love?

The most important step has two elements to it:

  • NARRATIVE DESIGN
  • PRE-PRODUCTION

Narrative design is about investing quality time to create a powerful narrative. A powerful narrative achieved “2” goals:

  • It is meaningful for the audience that it is meant for
  • It helps the individual / business achieve its goals

So ensure that you invest quality time in creating a powerful narrative.

Why does Mukesh Ambani’s public narrative attract the world?

Why does Mukesh Ambani’s public narrative attract the world?

This post is majorly my reflection of Mukesh Ambani’s speech that I heard yesterday at the Indian Mobile Congress, 2018.

I was standing with my camera about 20 steps from Mr. Ambani whose speech got a rousing acceptance. I also noted something interesting. The media persons around me swung into action when it was Mukesh’s turn to speak. Other industry stalwarts spoke before him.

Other speakers caught people’s attention. Mukesh caught people’s aspirations.

130 crore Indians are getting connected

Reliance Jio is fundamentally changing India. This was one of the biggest, the most audacious bet that Mukesh Ambani made. I am sure there might be islands of doubt, but Mukesh and his team at Jio are writing a new history of the new India. The world is watching.

What made Mukesh’s public narrative so appealing?

  • Mukesh’s entire speech was full of the vision of India
  • He spoke of how Jio is connecting the rural India and how that will open up a larger economy
  • He spoke how India was considered amongst the poorest countries, which is not true anymore
  • His choice of words were not about his company, he did not mention Jio several times, he did not rant about any policy makers. He garnered everybody’s respect because he captured their aspiration.

From the media journalist at IMC 2018 to the delegates, everybody was thrilled to hear Mukesh.

If India is your audience, aspiration is the common denominator

IF there was an aspiration metric to measure for global economic growth, India will top the charts everytime. I can safely assume it will happen for at least the coming 2 decades.

I cannot blow my own trumpet – no personal branding for me!

You have so many incredible years of experience, you are a growing founder of a business, you are a successful sports-star, you are an insanely creative artist. Why on earth will you not share your insights with the world and make this world a better place? Build an open world, it creates magic.

This is the only question that I ask all the leaders I meet is the above. If you believe in an open world that creates value for everyone, you must build a powerful and personally driven public narrative.

What are the most remarkable entrepreneurial brands led by individuals?

According to Seth Godin, a brand is:

“the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another. … But your brand is a story, a set of emotions and expectations and a stand-in for how we think and feel about what you do.”

The most incredible entrepreneurial brands led by individuals are:

If you are a CEO / Founder, own your own hashtag on the web

This is exactly the approach that we take when we design public narratives for founders / CXO’s that we work with.

Fake it till you make it does not apply in building a trusted personal public narrative

Fake it till you make it does not apply in building a trusted personal public narrative

I keep hearing at conferences and otherwise on the Internet from young entrepreneurs that it is okay to fake it till you make it. I don’t agree to the idea of faking it in any way. There is no point faking anything.

Do not fake it especially if it is your personal public narrative

The playbook that I share with my customers has the above amongst the top “5” fundamentals to always follow. In no way can you fake it and build trust. Similar to how you cannot build fake personal relationships, you cannot and you must not fake it even while you are trying to make something of value.

It will come out. On the Internet people see through you a lot faster.

You cannot assume yourself to be the smartest in the room. If that’s the case, you are in the wrong room. This room won’t add to either your growth or your business.

So what must you do?

  • Be authentic – you are who you are
  • Share gratitude – gratitude spreads. When people speak positive about you even when you are not around, that’s when you become successful

44% of a company’s market value is attributable to CEO reputation

44% of a company’s market value is attributable to CEO reputation

This is a statistic that was presented by this firm in 2015. In 2018 it is all the more relevant.

The late Steve at Apple, Richard at Virgin, Bill at Microsoft, Sridhar at Zoho, Narayan at Infosys, Vijay at PayTM, Dharmesh at Hubspot, Arianna at Huffington Post and Thrive Global, Seth at Seth Godin, Gary at Vayner Media, Naval at AngelList, Chamath at SocialCapital.

What’s common amongst all of them?

It is really how the world relates to their companies / institutions via them. While of-course some of them have thousands of employees spread across the world, some of them have even exited and in case of Steve, sadly he is no more, still the world knows Apple as Steve. Every startup office even to this date has Steve Jobs’ posters.

In the noise of social media, the CEO/ Founder’s public narrative has become more ‘real’ than the brand of the company

I do not see anything unusual here. Human stories drive human stories. The fundamental pillars that make us the most evolved organisms in the solar system (unless there are other super intelligent life forms that get discovered), we will always be inspired and moved by human potential and vision.

So how should you craft a powerful public narrative?

Here are the top 5 elements that I tell my customers (the founders and CXO’s that I work with):

  • #1: Be you. No facade. No fluff. No jazz. People will see through you.
  • #2: Your domain expertise and who you are ; these are 2 fundamentally different ‘you’.
  • #3: Be the reason for people to believe that you will make them more successful.
  • #4: Being diplomatic and politically correct makes people forget you faster than ever.
  • #5: Be consistently around people (with videos and blogs) ; if you are not ; you are invisible.

Remember, people have the ability to discover the needle in the haystack. The one’s who want to, will discover you. Its upon you to inspire and win them.

Starbucks mobile payments beat Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay in the U.S.

Fintech has been one of the top buzzwords in 2018. Mobile payments has been one of the top fintech applications. While in India amongst the private players PayTM won the game. It has only begun, I feel. UPI is a game changer and so is Aadhar enabled payments.

In the U.S. though, Starbucks emerged the winner

According to eMarketer, Starbucks has been the most used mobile payment apps in U.S. in 2018*:

  • Starbucks app: 23.4 million users
  • Apple Pay: 22.0 million users
  • Google Pay: 11.1 million users
  • Samsung Pay: 9.9 million users

*in-store payments

It is really the value and ease of use that drives adoption in fintech. Its how VAS drove adoption and engagement for telecom and it always will. Without the app-store, the smart phone won’t remain much smarter.

What is the most valuable reason that your customers pay you for?

What is the most valuable reason that your customers pay you for?
  • Why do your customers pay you?

  • If you were to increase your price, will they find an alternative?

  • What exact element of your overall offering do your customers value the most?

You must find a no frills, no jazz, no cover-up answer for question #3. This is exactly what will define your public narrative and the exact story for your sales and marketing teams to engage your customers with.

For some of you, the answer to the above question will also help you define your most valuable customer segment.

When I asked my customers the same question, below is what I discovered:

  • Customers value the exact public narrative that we design for them every month – they pay for the clarity that they get on what to communicate
  • They value the fact that we spend 6 – 8 hours every month with our customers and create the most valuable public narrative for them that wins them business growth and unlocks more opportunities

The above is an interesting revelation because ; for a long time we used to believe that ‘video creation in a lean format’ is our strength and that is what the customers pay for.
